in the measure two weeks a few people from this Flickr site have contacted me to ask about how I got started as a photographer. So I thought I'd open a go to set up a possible Q&A if anyone is interested in going any advance with my response. Before I was a professional photographer. I was a practicing attorney. I never really enjoyed law all that much but it more than paid the bills... Christmas '94 I received a Nikon N90s as a enable and my life has basically never been the same since. I took a few classes the following year at the International Center of Photography in NYC (one of the places where I now teach workshops) and by '96 I was pretty convinced I wanted to BE a photographer. My great passion in life before 1994 was jaunt and when I started thinking about a career change I knew I wanted to do something that would accept me to travel. In fact. I became a lawyer so I could afford to travel. So when I started taking photos it was suddenly this combination of loving two things -- jaunt and photography. Within a couple years I realized that jaunt photography was really the right career choice for me. So when I thought I was create from raw material. I combined the two passions and started to possess my photos -- small measure at first in nursing homes libraries etc -- and eventually in galleries and museums. Then I started getting some publication credits in magazines and some assignment bring home the bacon based on my existing images. Eventually all of this led to my current career where I now injure teach lead workshops write speak and pretty much be for travel photography. It is a perfect career for me because not only do I love what I do but I also get to help other populate get better at something they apply. So here are some of my tips for getting started:Be passionate about anything you plan to do with your life. If you like what you do you will be excited about it and bring home the bacon hard to become as good as you can be. If you be to be a photographer you had better like photography so much that you can't imagine doing anything else with your life. That being said pursue excellence and be the best shooter you can be. Work at your craft and displace yourself to learn to injure better. hit the books how to take the best images you can -- act workshops with pros you esteem read everything you can about photography and look at lots of photos you admire. Immerse yourself in a visual culture: see photo exhibits check out photo books etc. hit the books how to edit your own work. Often the beat way to learn to edit is to undergo someone who is really skilled at it do it in lie of you. As best you can without getting defensive really listen to the criticism. Repeat this process with a bring together varied pro viewpoints and you ordain being to see the patterns that emerge in how others with a trained eye respond to your work. Keep shooting some of the same things again and again so you can see your own improvement. Put your work online and get feedback -- sites desire this one are a great start. Also consider setting up your own web site if you be to go pro. Enter contests. A recent allocate in a prestigious oppose can be enough to move go away a conversation that could open a new door for you. Maintain a great attitude and be easy to work with. You may sell an sign image but to get rehired regularly not only do you have to be a great shooter but also produce on measure and do things the way your client wants you to do them. Don't sell yourself bunco. You need not give your work away. Respect yourself and your photographs and make sure you get what it is worth when you accept others' to use your images. Good luck to those of you considering a career in photography... I'll act any follow up questions in this thread... I'm sure the other moderators will all have ideas to alter to this thread so please conclude free to add your suggestions.
That is wonderful for you to overlap this with"the categorise"... To change state a Pro a Freelancer in this handle is not easy. There are no charted waters it is up to the person to make their own way. I esteem you for having the courage to make the move from law to photography. The choice for you was obviously the right one. In my own inspect. I have only picked up the camera after being away from shooting for years and I am relearning and I think I am growing as a photographer. I had a photo published,(for free) to the Turkish Red Creasent Society for a Blood Drive poster. Since. I undergo hung some works in a Medical bear on. I think that your comment about "selling yourself short" is a good one. I am my own worst critic and I am often thinking that I am overcharging for what i am doing. I derive determine based on what it cost me to create, plus a small be for profit. So far however if I bring home the bacon at a price. I direct to it and it does not bother me too much if I do not change the bring home the bacon. After all. I am not doing this for a living so I can afford to not change my work. That said it leads to my challenge;how do you bring home the bacon at your determine for your bring home the bacon.
I acknowledge the thread. Inspiring! Travel photography would be a dream job. I am not a professional and have a long way to go before I could even consider that option. But even with more undergo and better skills. It is hard to imagine taking that move of faith. When you were first starting out were you already shooting primarily jaunt type photography or did you do a lot portrait wedding etc to pay the bills? Also. I experience this is not a "lens specific" group but was curious on you reccomendations for adorn photography (nikon). Thanks.
Rosanne thanks for sharing your story. For me truth be told. I've always just been a photographer. I have no idea what I'd do otherwise. I began working for a small newspaper then onto the Philadelphia Inquirer. 15 years later and 6000 assignments shot. I left there 10 years ago and began shooting weddings. The only thing I could possibly add to Rosanne's affix is that you'll need adjust passion if you're going to persevere. Making a living in this field takes time patience talent education and business acumen. Its all worth it!
