"RN to BSN - Career Benefits and Education Options" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-23 12:59:25

By Michael V. Gruber The complexities of a changing medical field in technology advanced information and facing a growing leadership role among nurses has increased the need for a degree of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing among registered nurses (RN). This higher level of education takes commitment and dedication and in the following article we will outline how to achieve these goals. Advancing your nursing degree The difference between RN and BSN Beginning a career in nursing for those who desire an abbreviated education will get an associates degree (AD) which usually involves 2-3 years of schooling. A nurse may also follow a diploma program usually through a hospital that is also 2-3 years in length before becoming an RN. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Sample Survey. 70% of nurses have AD or diploma level degrees. An RN must also pass all required examinations such as the NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensing Examination for Registered Nurses) before practicing with patient contact. For many nurses looking to advance their careers a BSN is the natural next step. It is a 4 year program that includes research oriented learning leadership training and liberal arts. Many of the students that are enrolled in the BSN program are previous RNs with associate degrees or diplomas. They are now going back to school with all the hardships involved; financially time inflexibility family and other outstanding commitments. The differences between an RN and BSN are not necessarily clear to the patient who is being treated with basic care. A nurse treating a patient wont be asked excuse me are you a RN or a BSN? Yet the differences lie within. The education gained the additional technical training and the potential advancement are not immediately recognized by the patient. A nurse with a BSN can review research papers advocate for the patient work with leaders in the hospital or medical facility with confidence and advanced management skills. A nurse with an RN may have all these abilities yet a BSN enhances them and increases advancement opportunities. Career Opportunities with a BSN RNs return to school for a number of reasons yet many are personal in nature: To become leaders in the nursing industry advancing their careers or move to the next level and receive a masters or doctoral degree. Management-level nursing requires an advanced degree such as a BSN. According to the U. S. Department of Labor. Bureau of Labor Statistics in management nurses can become anywhere from the assistant head nurse or head nurse to assistant director director and vice president and upwards. Other career opportunities include research consulting and teaching. A nurse with a BSN can manage a home health care clinic and ambulatory services etc. Nurses can also move into the business side of nursing to becoming an manager of an insurance company pharmaceutical manufacturer and managed care organization (U. S. Dept of Labor. 2005). Salary Benefits of advancing a degree from RN to BSN Advanced nursing degrees create new career opportunities and justify an increased salary. An RN and a BSN will receive the same salary for the same nursing position but as the BSN moves through the ranks to a higher position salaries tend to increase. For example a promotion to a management position of head nurse with a BSN has a higher salary than being the floor nurse with an RN. Education Opportunities and Education Cost In 2004 there were 600 RN to BSN programs in the United States. Many RN's use the tuition reimbursement from their employer as an incentive to go back for the BSN. There are also accelerated BSN programs for those individuals who already attained bachelor or higher degrees and wish to go into nursing. There are more than 165 of these programs in the United States. These programs are 12 to 18 months in length (U. S. Dept of Labor. 2005). In choosing the appropriate program it is necessary to choose whether to work in a classroom setting or study through an online RN to BSN program. The classroom setting has many benefits which include peer contact and live lectures. Sharing experiences with others and learning from other previous like-minded RNs is a great benefit. The dilemma with classroom education for most nurses is the stringent scheduling and time management needed to attend class and work around an RNs busy schedule. An online nursing degree course is the other alternative. It is a way for nurses to work while continuing with their education with flexibility around time commitments. The non-clinical portion of the classroom courses are given online and the clinicals are usually arranged at a medical facility near the nurses home. There may be timed lectures or the nurses may do lectures at their own time with assignments being sent to the lecturer by fax or mail on designated due dates. Examinations are usually offered online. Many times the online school follows a semester schedule and has a set start and finish date though this is not true for all schools. To learn more about online RN to BSN programs refer to your school of choice and learn what that school offers. Conclusion Personal satisfaction a qualitative factor that can not be measured or quantified is what many BSN students say is most important about receiving their advanced degree. Our society is advancing in all areas with technology and intellectual expertise. The information is available and the prerequisites allow many RN's to attain an advanced degree; the determining factor is we must advance as a society and create leaders in all areas of industry. A BSN gives the degree and knowledge and critical leadership skills for an RN to advance in the world of medicine business and personal achievement. By Michael V. Gruber. "Your career track to far as an NP" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-07-01 07:38:39

The largest most active online nursing community. Join 289,480 nurses from around the world to hit the books communicate and network. For full allnurses com access today - it's free! Problems during registration? Please don't delay to. Hi. I was wondering if the NPs on this board can give me an idea of how they became NPs. Something like - "I went to school A for RN degree worked as RN for x many years went to school for masters became NP and worked in Y capacity (which field hospital/clinic setting etc?) Just trying to get a feel of what the typical progression is. Here's exploit: Finished BSN in 1991 (took me five years but I spent a desire time undecided on my major as an undergrad). Worked as RN in different areas including Neurosurgery ICU. SICU short save in Burn Unit management position in long call care. Cardiology Step-down and ER. Started MSN January 2002 with Adult Acute compassionate Nurse Practitioner specialization. Earned MSN degree December 2003 (yeah. I finished the MSN in exactly 2 years!). Got certified as ACNP by ANCC April 2003. Started work as NP in May 2003. Taught clinicals in an ADN program from January 2003 to April 2003 (that's why I didn't start bring home the bacon as NP right away). Currently an adult critical compassionate NP at a tertiary hospital. Been an NP for 3 years now. align say: I don't evaluate one has to wait as desire as I did to jump into a program for an advanced practice role. Here's exploit (I'm a CNS however). Became an LPN in 92. ADN in 94. BSN in 2004. MSN in 2005 and then did a post-MSN adult health CNS certificate. My nursing career was spent in ER (10 years) and ICU 2 years. Became ADN RN and worked for several years as RN in OB. Then did a 4-year preceptorship with OB-GYN MD grad bunco program as OB NP and sat for national certification as OB-GYN NP. After a few years as OB-GYN NP went back for MSN FNP with specialty area Family Practice/ED. Now dual-cert. NP. Heh - here's a shorter progression (I feel like such a do by among the rest of ya'll !) While in nursing school researched FNP shadowed NP's and worked in community with NP's BSN 2005 worked full time as RN for 8 mos started dual degree FNP/MPH program 2006 worked 24/wk move time 2007 resigned RN job and started public health job to obtain more research experience (and pay in the door for internat'l internship) doing extra NP clinical/attending conferences to specialize in HIV... And there you have it! Thinking of 1 or 2 national certifications next year oncology and urology might be interesting to act and can bring home the bacon into my beat measure job (CME account). Or I might just take a year off from proffesional development. 1997 - graduated with my BSN1997 to 2005 - worked several different positions as an RN (tele urgent care progressive cardiac. ER - CEN certified in 2004)2005 to current - still work per diem in ER; part-time FNP student - will have Summer 2009 Sorry. I know I'm not an NP yet but I figured I would post my progression track so far. I ultimately want to wind up in urgent compassionate or an inner-city health clinic. Here's mine:1997-2000: Graduated from high school ('97) and then went to an undergraduate college to get a lot of basics because I didn't experience what I wanted to do. Was one PE credit from AAS degree2000: Became a certified nurse assistant - worked at a psych hospital then in ER as a nurse tech then as an extern2003: Graduated from an ADN program - worked in ER2005-2006: Completed RN-BSN degree online in two semesters - worked in ERMay 2006-DECEMBER 2007!!!: ACNP in 18 months! Hi. I was wondering if the NPs on this board can give me an idea of how they became NPs. Something like - "I went to school A for RN degree worked as RN for x many years went to educate for masters became NP and worked in Y capacity (which field hospital/clinic setting etc?) Just trying to get a feel of what the typical progression is. 1981 - graduated with a Bachelor's in Communication Disorders planning to eventually get a higher degree in either Deaf education or audiology (which required a Masters degree). Worked in the government instead as a clerk typist and volunteered with deaf kids as a teacher's aide and at my church doing sign language interpreting 1986 - Married stayed home from 1988 -2001 as wife and mom cooking cleaning mediating arguments teaching social skills (don't hit don't eat with your hands say thank you and please please grow up to be nice folks that I won't undergo to see on TV on one of those "America's Most Wanted type Shows"...) Loved almost every minute....2001 - 5 kids had grown a little (2 adopted. 3 biological) therefore I returned to school with the 5 teens at home to get prerequisites for BSN.2002 - Entered BSN program. Survived by the grace of God using the study and commune method.2004 - Graduated with BSN degree by the grace of God2004 - 2007 - worked as rehabilitation nurse,.. worked days evenings weekends holidays. Loved working with that patient population (unfortunately I was developing aches and pains from lifting pulling shifting patients etc). One day while I had a difficult patient in midair in a Hoyer displace who was fussing at me a light bulb went on above my head lilke in the cartoons and I turned to the other nurse who was helping me and said... "that's it. I'm going back to get my Masters Degree". 2007 - Should soon graduate in December 2007 with a Masters in Adult Health (and it was difficult even with the pray and study method... I haven't worked many hours since March 2007 due to school work...). I plan to take the certification evaluate in January or February (takes time for transcripts etc to be ready so that students can take the certification test for NPs). (Only one teen at domiciliate now....)Not an NP until I am Certified.. who knows what's next... I'll say one thing. Just had my last final exam hopefully of my life and I feel it was worth going back to school..................... Would like to work with either a disabled and/or elderly population as an ANP one day soon...

If you have any problems with the registration process or your account login gratify I am really stuck deciding what I want to major in. I have completed all gen-ed's and prereqs that are the same for both (except maybe pharmacology). Anyone have any advice? I know this is a nursing forum. I was hoping someone could sell me on nursing haha.. j/k.. I feel I would enjoy either professions. I am leaning towards nursing because of the knowledge of care for and the be and sonography because it is less "gross" and possibly less stressful. Anyone have any advice how to choose? Go for nursing for the variety of experiences. After you've checked so many livers kidneys fetuses and DVTs. I would think it would be boring. Good luck in whatever you do. evaluate to yourself: how many times undergo I heard of a nurse getting burnt out versus how many times have I heard of a sonographer getting burnt out? The daily bring home the bacon of a sonographer may be more routine than that of an RN. However it also less stressful and the pay and hours are usually better depending on where you want to work. It all depends on what is more important to you. What about the bespeak aspect? Are there as many positions change state for sonography as there are in Nursing? Of course not. Are there as many positions change state for CRNA's as in Nursing? Does that mean there is a weaker demand for CRNA's than for nurses? The bespeak must be high because they make good money in many cases more than nursing. In the last 20 years it's standard for every hit pregnant person to get a sonogram more than once so the bespeak is there. It's also very important and specialized. The sonographer is the one that discovers fetal demise sees the tumor there that requires advance testing finds the deep stain thrombosus etc. I still say go for nursing.

I'm a wanna be nurse (since I was 18) never went for it but recently completed my Bachelors in Org Mgmt 2004. Can't move this heartfelt desire to go for my lifelong dream. (everyone who knows me say I'd be a great one including my CNA instructor). Recently passed a CNA class with a "B" and state testing this month. undergo some medical admin experience but be clinical sooo bad. Looking into Excelsior-- what are my chances-- where should I go away since I'm not so young and Nursing is so competitive ?? Hi and welcome to the siteGood luck on your journey and I don't think you are too old. Moved to Nurse career advice __________________'The art of medicine consists of amusing the patient while nature cures the disease' Francois Maie Arouet De Voltaire (1694-1778) Look into your local schools and communicate to them. You might believe getting an LPN first which is usually a little less competetive to get into. Then you can get your RN after that. I think Excelsior is for people who are already an LPN.

All this and much more is available to you absolutely remove when you for an account so ! If you have any problems with the registration affect or your account login gratify I don't know the first step. I've wanted to become a R. N since I was 8 years old. I'm 16 now. I'm headed to a school now that will give me my high school diploma and has carrer placement. I'm getting ready to go away in January and it's a 2-year program. But. I'm so confused on the process to become a R. N. Because I know you have to be a LPN before RN and I think NA before becoming a LPN. I don't know someone gratify help me understand this more. You don't have to have anything except a high school diploma to go into RN educate. I went straight from college into a nursing school! Some programs do demand you to either change state a CNA or an LPN before you can get your RN but nearly every educate I experience of around where I live doesn't. You can start checking out the schools you are interested in now. They should have a website with information on their programs or you can have them send you information. Also so you have a guidance counselor that you could communicate to? Feel free to PM me if you undergo any more questions! Hi Dreamjob No you do not have to be an LPN before you change state an RN.. but you may if you wish. Taking a CNA class may be required for your program-it was for exploit.... Your beat bet would be to communicate the school you desire to be. They will have more information than you experience what to do with! Good luck. BookwormRN As others have said LPN isn't required. However that's the path I took as a junior in highschool I did the CNA schedule and as a senior in high educate I did the first 9 months of the LPN program while working as a CNA then once I graduated highschool I had nine months left in the LPN schedule worked as a CNA and graduated from the LPN schedule this past May. I work beat time now at a hospital and plan on going approve to educate next semester to work on my RN. The CNA to LPN and LPN to RN path may take a little bit longer but financially it can definately be worth it not to have in mind once I graduate as an RN I'll undergo already been working as a care for for a couple of years and that experience can make a world of difference. __________________"populate ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."-Rogers Hornsby bring home the bacon with the career placement center in your high educate. They can direct you towards the nursing programs that are alter for you. They should also be able to advise you on getting any financial aid that might be available to you so that you can pay for the school of your choice. As others have said there is no be to bring home the bacon you way up the career ladder to become an RN. At many schools you can register the RN schedule alter out of high school -- go to college for a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) just like you classmates who ordain be going to college to chew over other fields. Starting out at the university level getting a 4-year BSN to go away with can be more expensive at the beginning but it gets you the BSN at a younger age that you ordain need to qualify for a wider variety of jobs and for more go jobs later. That route is the "abstain track" to leadership positions in nursing and to the many different roles in nursing other than a hospital staff nurse lay. Some people choose to start their RN careers by getting a 2-year cerebrate's Degree (ADN) or a 3-year Diploma from a hospital educate of nursing. Those options can be less expensive in the beginning but they will require that you go back to school later to get the BSN (or graduate degree) later if you want the more varied and advanced career opportunities later. Some people are very happy taking that career pathway and it works come up for them -- particularly if their future employers back up them pay for the additional education. However other populate are not so satisfied with doing their education a step at a measure. They find it difficult to go back to school later in life once they have become adults and be to completely support themselves financially have to pay contract or a accommodate mortgage undergo a husband to consider have kids to take care of etc. Those people wish they had gotten that BSN right out of high school while their parents were still giving them a displace to be for remove and they didn't have so many other committments that makes it more difficult to go back to school later. Some people always plan to go back to school for that BSN but never get around to it and get bitter about their career as they don't have the options for career advancement and/or variety in middle-age that they would desire to undergo. As I said work with your educate's advisors and do lots of research on the many different options available for someone in your position. Look at both the positives and the negatives of each option and decide the one that is best for you. Good luck!

I'm in the US now and I just passed my nclex exam (im a USRN now) I'm out of status and am currently looking for a hospital who could direct hire me and support my green card visa possibly.. Does anyone of you know a hospital that fits these? I suggest you analyse out the International forum and construe up on retrogression. Currently there are no visas to alter and also because you are out of status you can not adjust. Out of status then no endorse that can be adjusted. No visas available now to adjust to so you cannot remain in the US either. If you came here on a tourist visa and that expired you be to leave the US. Period. There is not one thing that anyone can do so that you can remain here. You can try to find all of the employers that you wish but USCIS ordain not accept you to acquire a endorse to stay and bring home the bacon here. There is also a retrogression in effect so there is no way that you can be in the US. This has been a very well known fact for almost a year so it is not anything new. Be aware that if you get picked up for anything no matter how minor you are subject to deportation for ten years and will not be permitted to reenter the US for any reason. Not a wise thing to do at this time. I'm in the US now and I just passed my nclex exam (im a USRN now) I'm out of status and am currently looking for a hospital who could enjoin hire me and sponsor my color card endorse possibly.. Because of the retrogression you cannot alter status and no hospital ordain support you for a greencard. unless you undergo a family petition filed for you. (I-130). So that you can be qualified for sec245i to be able to alter status. desire the discuss of an Immigration lawyer. sorry but what you have posted does not apply to her especially if she came to the US on a tourist visa and then just stayed. ICE is frowning on this and deporting if they are picked up. The sec245i does not apply as she did not train here in the US and has been here for the required number of years. Family cannot petition her here with her in the US and it is years to get the visa with that. It needs to be done out of the US. But right now with an overstay on her visa it is going to be difficult to get anything done. And change surface more so since there are no visas available and the retrogression expected to be continuing for those from PI for sometime. Only option is to get the country on her own and then get petitioned from out of the US thru Consular Processing. The Visa check award is also needed and that takes a couple of months to get. There just is no way to legally remain in the US and she will get the same information from any reputable attorney.
