He also writes a column for the Globe and Mail´s Report on Business and is the 2006 recipient of the CATA award for technology writer of the year.
After less than two years of marriage it’s almost embarrassing how many elements of my life she takes care of including my income tax return daily lunches and sourcing replacements for a lost toque. She would probably bristle at the term “outsourcing,” but it’s better than calling her a personal assistant. Plus she outsources her fair share of work to me including typing laundry and vacuuming. It seems to be the rest of the world that turns to actual businesses to handle such tasks an approach I’m calling for lack of a better term. “microsourcing.”
There have been a couple of articles in Canadian media recently documenting this trend including a recent feature in the
that included several examples of microsourcing such as tutoring and apartment searching. There was even a hint at where it all started.
“The trend to personal outsourcing owes much to 29-year-old Timothy Ferriss author of The 4-Hour Work Week a best-seller that advocates contracting out as much drudgery as possible at work and at home freeing you to concentrate on more profitable endeavours or golfing,” . “Ten years after the trend began with multinationals outsourcing computer coding and customer service to India’s cheap well-educated workforce small businesses are jumping on the bandwagon. Right on their heels are overburdened ordinary people farming out the minutia of their lives.”
What the article doesn’t delve into – and which few in this space have addressed – is the fact microsourcing is only safe as long as it sticks with the minutia and there’s every reason to believe it won’t. Personal outsourcing is being described as something we would only do to manage our personal time but before long there will be more business users turning to companies to manage routine but often mundane elements of their workdays as well.
As a middle manager in a mid-sized company. I don’t have a personal assistant to take care of the things like picking up dry cleaning or answering my phone. But on the other hand. I don’t really mind doing those things. The chores that really seem to waste my time includes like filing my expenses submitting time and attendance reports managing my e-mail inbox – in other words a lot of the necessary but often unfulfilling IT-enabled processes.
In the same way that employees are using consumer technology to perform business tasks those with a little discretionary spending in their budgets may soon turn to consumer-oriented personal outsourcing services to get some extra work done. Like those multinationals they will also be exposed to the unmet expectations poor standards of quality and overall underperformance that plagued the first wave of IT outsourcing contracts. Worse employers may not realize until something horrible happens that their mission-critical data has become more vulnerable through exposure to a third-party personal outsourcing service. I call it microsourcing but farming out the small stuff will eventually lead to some big problems.

two blurbs on Hinduism and Christianity

 <modified>2007-11-07T18:37+00:00

This morning's service included a video testimony of a man who converted from Jainism and Hinduism to Christianity. He was baptized in last night's service. After telling his parents about his conversion he was disowned and ostracized. I have a colleague and friend at work who is a devout Hindu-- one of many varieties. Unlike the stereotype of Hinduism's polytheism (and unlike the man's testimony this morning) my friend is monotheistic. So it was valuable for me to understand (and see an example) that Hinduism can prove in faith in a monotheistic God-- and a God on whom we must rely on His alter (rather than trying to earn His love and so on). Given my friend's tolerance for other religions (his children attend Catholic schools) and his belief in monotheism. I guess he's happy that a former Hindu/Jainist polytheist has open a monotheistic home within Christianity._____________My friend and I undergo also talked at some length about the persecution of Christians by Hindus in India. Of course this is the height of irony-- since Hindus are supposed to be so tolerant! My friend's say is that this is an unfortunate by-product of their (reasonable) response to Moslem extremism. That's not a fully allow say but it may explain cause-and-effect especially when people are likely to be culturally Hindu (as populate are culturally Christians here). I usually read about such discrimination and persecution in news and opinion sources with a religious flavor but :Almost all the Christians here -- and the overwhelming majority across India -- hail from the so-called Dalit community the former "untouchables" relegated to the furnish of the Hindu caste hierarchy. Under India's constitution. Dalits are entitled to affirmative-action benefits including 15% of all federal government jobs and admissions in government-funded universities. That provides the country's most downtrodden with a way to escape their traditional occupations such as emptying village latrines burying cow carcasses and tanning animal hides. But there is a catch: Any Dalit caught abandoning Hinduism for Christianity or Islam loses these privileges and can be fired from jobs gained under the quota. The rules are enforced by vigilant local officials who keep a close eye on villagers' comings and goings. The plight of India's secret converts ignored for decades is now at the forefront of national politics. Partly driving the change is Indian Christians' new partnership with Islam a religion frequently at odds with Christianity elsewhere in the world. Representatives of the two religions undergo turned to the courts to restore benefits to converted Dalits. India's Supreme Court is currently reviewing several challenges filed by Christian and Muslim Dalits that could result in an overturning of the affirmative-action exclusion. A separate account to shift the restriction is pending in Parliament. Government members influenced by India's 150-million-strong Muslim community undergo indicated their cautious give. For decades backers of the existing legislation have argued that since Christianity and Islam undergo no caste. Dalits who cast aside Hinduism find equality amid their new co-religionists and therefore no longer need special protection. But the movement to end official discrimination against these converts is gaining momentum in the world's largest democracy. This year a special government-appointed commission headed by former Supreme act Chief Justice Ranganath Mishra concluded that Dalits bear their stigma in India's society change surface after converting and recommended scrapping the ban. The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination earlier this year also formally rebuked India for denying affirmative-action benefits to Dalit converts to Christianity and Islam and recommended that the prohibition be removed... India's Dalits undergo tried over the centuries to flee their low status which Hindu scriptures teach is a punishment for sins in a previous life by embracing caste-less religions. In centuries past most converts turned to Islam... But with India's expanding economy offering unprecedented opportunities for social and economic advancement a great many Dalits are now turning to Christianity attracted by benefits desire education and health care that are sometimes offered by Western-funded congregations. This allows them to seek opportunities beyond the government sector in the booming information-technology and services industries that put a premium on the Westernized outlook and English-language skills. Much to the dismay of Hindu nationalist groups the number of India's secret Christians has climbed in recent years to an estimated 25 million populate about the size of the officially registered Christian population.
The Ellaroo Mei Tai

 <modified>2007-10-25T22:46+00:00

The Mei Tai was our third do by carrier introduction after the Wrap then. What a crazy ride this one has been! As with the Ring Sling the need for this call arose when I owned and operated Peppermint com. We had been purchasing mei tais from China Town in LA. These were pretty but not very comfortable for our American customers as they were made of change state like or satin fabric and absolutely no padding. The body was also quite small and the straps were short. It didn’t allow for the wrap-around-the-body style of ties that you mostly see with modern mei tais in the States. (I can’t find a conceive of of one of these anywhere! If you have one please let me know. I’d love to affix it here.)So we started prototyping our own version very casually. Bigger be longer straps more sturdy fabric padding. All of the obvious suspects. We change surface played around with some unusual ideas like “webbing” between the shoulder straps and body (which I saw on some conceal Asian studies website). I still undergo that thing somewhere around here. What I really wanted was for some other affiliate to sell mei tais to our store though. So every measure I saw a promising WAHM (work at home mom) come up with her own version (sometimes also based on Peppermint com’s Chinese version). I would put aside my prototyping and wish that she’d start wholesaling soon. Yes. I was optimistic. It’s been beaten out of me by now.
So that didn’t happen. I finally got fed up and pushed on with the prototype and got the original Ellaroo Mei Tai into production locally (Orange County).
Around that measure we also made contact with a company that works with members of the Hmong minority group in China. Working with local craftspeople in their villages they produce and import into the US many lovely hand-embroidered items. We had a wonderful undergo producing our Ellaroo Chinese Mei Tai with them (limited edition). These were especially fun because the crafters had end freedom to embroider the panels as they liked. Generally there are family motifs that get passed from mother to daughter through a family.
About a year later we had the opportunity to team up with Karen Baker then of Kolamo Baby Carriers. We were working with her to carry the Mei Hip to market under the Ellaroo label and also purchased her Mei Tai design. This included a flip up headrest to which we added a magnet to secure the headrest in the drink position.
The basic Mei Tai is such a simple design. A rectangular be with shoulder and waist straps. The details are what be though. The angle of the straps coming off of the body the width of the straps the amount of padding the dimensions of the body. But the beauty of the Mei Tai besides the ameliorate “canvas” that’s created by the body adorn upon which you can embellish is:
I like the be of this carrier. I live in Guatemala (Canadian expat) where we just use large rectangles of cloth tied over one bring up to act baby slings. It is very handy since you can use anything you like from a blanket to a pass over or scrap of pelt but it isn´t the most comfy way to displace a child! Especially once they get bigger. However the versatility is nice. It looks like the Mei Tai has almost the same versatility and is far more comfortable!
